Installing Netscape Application Server
Before you install Netscape Application Server, see "Planning Your Installation" on page 7. The section explains important concepts and information required to properly install and configure Netscape Application Server. Also, refer to the Installation Planning Worksheet at the end of this guide to track information you will need to perform the steps outlined here.

The Netscape Application Server installation program performs the following tasks:

Note: You must be logged on to Windows NT as a user with administrator privileges to install Netscape Application Server.

To install Netscape Application Server

  1. Insert the Netscape Application Server Install CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Start on the Windows NT taskbar and click Run, or choose File - Run from the Windows NT Program Manager and click Run.
  3. Click Browse and go to the CD-ROM drive (for example, D:\).
  4. Under the NT directory, run the file setup.exe.
  5. Follow the instructions of the installation program.
  6. When prompted for the software you want to install, click one of the following:
  7. Enter the directory name. The default directory is c:\nas21\.
  8. You cannot use a directory name that includes spaces.

  9. Enter the product key of Netscape Application Server. See the Welcome letter you received with the product for the correct key.
  10. When prompted for the type of web server to be used with this installation of Netscape Application Server, click one of the following:
  11. If you select "None," proceed to Step 13. Then, after you finish installing, proceed to "Installing the Netscape Application Server Web Connector Plug- in" on page 24 for information about installing the plug-in that will allow your Netscape Application Server machine to communicate with your web server.

  12. If you have multiple instances installed of the web server you specified, click the instance that will be used with this installation of Netscape Application Server.
  13. Specify the location of your web server's HTML files. The default directory is <web server directory>\docs.
  14. Specify the location of your web server's CGI programs. The default directory is <web server directory>\docs\cgi-bin.
  15. Enter the number of Java Servers (KJS) and C++ Servers (KCS) used to process applications. The default value is 1; increase this to handle high processing loads.
  16. Enter the port numbers for the Administrative Server (KAS), the Executive Server (KXS), the Java Servers (KJS), and C++ Servers (KCS). All port numbers you specify are for listener ports, must be within the acceptable range (1025 to 65535), and must be unique (not used by any other applications on your system).
  17. If your system uses dynamic IP addressing, such as with the DHCP protocol, the installation program asks you to specify your current IP address.
  18. If you wish to use data synchronization, do not install on machines using dynamic IP addressing.

  19. When prompted whether the server will synchronize data across servers, click Yes if you intend to synchronize session and state information across multiple servers for failover and fault tolerance.
  20. If you click No, go to Step 23.

For more information about data synchronization, see Chapter 13, "Managing Distributed Data Synchronization," in the Administration Guide.

  21. Enter the name of the cluster that this Netscape Application Server will participate in.
  22. Indicate if you are currently installing a Sync Server or a Sync Local. If you are installing a Sync Local, then this server will use data synchronization services, but is not eligible to become a Sync Primary or the Sync Backup.
  23. Enter the total number of Sync Servers that you plan to have in the cluster.
  24. Specify the IP address of each Sync Server in the cluster and its corresponding Executive Server port number.
  25. After you enter all the IP addresses of the machines in the cluster, specify the priority rating of each.
  26. The installation program starts by listing all of the Sync Servers you entered and asks you to choose which one has the highest priority for taking over as Sync Primary. When you choose it, the program lists the remaining Sync Servers and asks you to choose which one has the next priority for taking over as Sync Primary. You repeat this step—choosing Sync Servers in order of priority—until you have assigned a priority to all the Sync Servers you specified in Step 20.

For each installation of a Netscape Application Server within the cluster you specified in Step 17, enter the same set of IP addresses and port numbers. In other words, in Step 20 of each Netscape Application Server in the cluster, enter the same data and then repeat Step 21. The addresses, port numbers, and priority rating for each machine must match across installations for the cluster to function properly.

  27. Specify the maximum number of Sync Backup servers (0 or 1) that should be active while the cluster is running.
  28. When prompted for the Server Administrator password, enter the password that will be required to log on to the Administrative Server through the Administrator tool.
  29. Rank the installed databases in priority order.
  30. The installation program detects all supported database client software that is installed. The clients are required for your applications to connect to your backend databases. You must rank the installed clients in order of connectivity priority. Note that the sample applications will be configured for the highest priority database.

For more information about prioritizing and configuring database connections, see Chapter 12, "Working with Databases," in the Administration Guide.

  31. Specify the database client libraries for each database you specified in Step 24. For information, see "Database Configuration Issues" on page 11.
  32. Specify the program folder for Netscape Application Server. The default is Netscape Application Server 2.1.
  33. Review the summary provided by the installation program of the configuration you have selected. If necessary, go back and make changes.
  34. When the installation is complete, reboot the computer so that the new settings take effect.
